It is located in the throwing rocks blasting step which is in the upper part of the main coal seams. Mining on the 5th coal seam will has an influence on the 6th coal seam which is under the 5th coal seam.In order to ensure a smooth mining on the 6th coal seam, the mining scheme design and feasibility assessment on the 5th coal seam is necessary. The research objectives of this paper are completed by theoretical analysis and mathematical. Firstly, previous studies in thin coal seam areas are summarized. A feasibility analysis on the 5th coal seam is carried out from the perspective of the geological resource conditions. Secondly, analyze the 5th coal seam mining viable process detailedly without considering the impact on the main coal seam, then a mathematical model for viable process uation is build by choosing uation inds. We can use this modle to select the viable process and recommend the surface miner semi-continuous process finally. Thirdly, according to the geological resource conditions and production status of Heidaigou surface coal mine, four mining schemes of the 5th coal mining are proposed, which are mining scheme based on current mining conditions, mining scheme by using loose blasting-single buchet-truck stripping on the rock under the 5th coal seam, mining scheme by using casting blast-dragline overcast on the rock under the 5th coal seam and mining scheme by using loose blasting- dragline overcast on the rock under the 5th coal seam respectively. Through a technical feasibility analysis on the four mining schemes, I find that the 5th coal seam is inappropriate to be mined based on current mining conditions and the mining scheme by using loose blasting-single buchet-truck stripping on the rock under the 5th coal seam is not recommended because it changes the current process of Heidaigou surface coal mine seriously. The remaining two mining schemes are both technically feasible. Finally, the mining scheme by using loose blasting- dragline overcast stripping on the rock between the 5th and the 6th coal seam is recommoned. Last, surface miner is determined to the mining of the 5th coal seam. Other related content are also included in this paper, such as working s of the surface miner, operating procedure, working area parameters, accumulation process of the IV coal ridge and arranging of transportation system etc. Then the working characteristic of the cutting rotors in the surface miner are analyzed. The position of the seleted mining line when using suface miner is determined from the perspective of economic losses by gangue mixing and losing of the 5th coal seam. Tiered election for the 5th coal seam is designed last.
